Do You Play Pickleball Tournaments

Tournament Prep Guide

By: Kyle McMakin

1. Preparing for the Tournament: Leading up to a tournament, ensure consistent training and match play. I recommend regular practice sessions to improve your skills, focusing on dinking, 3rd shot drops, drives, resets, and both countering and attacking. Set up practice matches with your partner to gain valuable playing experience together. Additionally, practice visualization and positive self-talk to boost confidence.

 2. Tournament Day: Arrive early at the venue to check in, warm up, and familiarize yourself with the courts. Bring essential gear, including water, electrolytes, snacks, an extra paddle, and sunscreen. For sustenance, consume a substantial meal at least an hour and a half before starting, choosing something light yet energizing. Prior to hitting balls, engage in a dynamic warm-up routine to prepare your body effectively. During warm-up, cover all shot types, focusing on dinking, drops, drives, and volleys, while ensuring you're comfortable attacking balls both in the air and off the bounce. Aim to arrive early enough to secure adequate warm-up time, and conclude your warm-up with a practice game or two to ensure readiness for the event.

 3. During the Tournament: Adapt your strategies based on opponents' strengths and weaknesses. Develop a game plan and maintain focus on executing it, while remaining adaptable to adjustments as needed. Take note of successful tactics against opponents for future reference. Stay hydrated throughout the day, fueling your body with nutritious snacks. Reflect on each match to identify areas of improvement and make necessary adjustments moving forward.

4. Post-Tournament Reflection: Reflect on your performance, acknowledging both strengths and areas for growth. Consider the lessons learned from each match and how they can inform future training and tournament participation. Establish new goals based on tournament experiences and areas requiring development. Most importantly, enjoy the experience and the journey of continual improvement.
