๐ Tournament Highlights
The 2nd Annual Tennessee Soybean Festival Pickleball Palooza set the tone for September with an outstanding turnout on Labor Day. Held at the University of Tennessee Martin courts, the tournament drew 129 participants - nearly 60 more players than last year's inaugural event! Tournament coordinator Barrett Belote celebrated the diverse mix of ages and skill levels, with competitors like Joey Meeks and Hayden Yates embodying the competitive spirit that makes our sport special.
Yates, who travels nationwide seeking challenging competition, exemplified the dedication of modern pickleball athletes. The tournament featured multiple divisions organized by skill level, gender, and mixed doubles categories, demonstrating how inclusive competition continues to drive participation growth across all demographics.
๐ Industry & Business News
Bowling Green, Ohio celebrated a major milestone with the grand opening of their new outdoor pickleball complex at the BG Community Center on September 4, 2025. This $640,000 facility features eight dedicated courts with professional lighting, spectator seating, and perimeter fencing. The BG Parks and Recreation Foundation successfully raised over $100,000 in private funds to supplement the city's $150,000 ARPA funding investment.
Meanwhile, Newberg, Oregon's Chehalem Park and Recreation District broke ground on an ambitious $785,879 project at Jaquith Park. The innovative design includes six dedicated pickleball courts plus flexible dual-purpose courts that can accommodate either tennis or additional pickleball play based on community demand. Construction continues through year-end, weather permitting.
In professional league news, Major League Pickleball's recent championship finals drew impressive viewership numbers, with CBS broadcasting averaging 433,000 viewers - marking it as the second-most watched professional pickleball match in television history!
๐ Global Pickleball Growth
The sport's expansion continues beyond traditional hotspots, with communities across diverse geographic regions investing in infrastructure. From Tennessee's integration with agricultural festivals to Ohio's suburban community center model and Oregon's flexible park designs, pickleball is adapting to local cultures while maintaining its universal appeal.
College pickleball received a major boost with the APP Selkirk Collegiate Series becoming a NIRSA Championship Series event with official USA Pickleball sanctioning. The 2026 championships will feature $85,000 in total prize money, establishing a clear pathway for young players to develop their skills competitively.
โ๏ธ Rules & Regulations
Significant equipment regulations took effect this summer, with USA Pickleball removing several high-performance paddle models from approved play due to excessive "trampoline effect" measurements. Popular paddles from JOOLA, Gearbox, and ProKennex were affected by these restrictions aimed at maintaining the sport's emphasis on finesse and strategy over raw power.
In a challenging development for the pickleball community, Boise, Idaho settled a lawsuit requiring the conversion of pickleball courts at Willow Lane Park and Manitou Park back to tennis-only facilities by December 2025. The city plans to develop comprehensive court siting guidelines to better inform future facility placement decisions and avoid similar conflicts.
๐ฏ Player Spotlight
This week we celebrate the everyday heroes making pickleball special. Greg Rogers from Bowling Green shared his inspiring story of losing 40 pounds and managing diabetes through regular pickleball play, noting that "it never felt like exercise." His transformation exemplifies how our sport combines fitness with fun in a uniquely effective way.
Paul Walker, a 10-year pickleball veteran who started playing at his parents' Florida home, championed the new Bowling Green courts, highlighting how proper outdoor facilities with dedicated lines and lighting transform the playing experience for entire communities.
๐ Upcoming Events
As we move into fall, tournament season continues to heat up across Southern California and beyond. The APP Tour's expanded schedule features 14 nationally televised events throughout 2025, with more than 55 hours of broadcast coverage across ESPN, CBS, and Fox Sports networks.
Local players should note that with new facility openings and court conversions happening nationwide, it's an excellent time to explore tournament opportunities in neighboring states while our own San Diego facilities continue to expand.
